Three-year PhD studentship at Exeter Climate Systems (XCS)
College of Engineering, Mathematics and Physical Sciences
University of Exeter, UK
Project: "Statistical-dynamical analysis and modelling of atmospheric
variability"
Exeter Climate Systems
(http://emps.exeter.ac.uk/mathematics-computer-science/research/xcs/)
is a rapidly growing centre of excellence in the application of
mathematics and statistics in weather and climate science. It is located
within the College of Engineering, Mathematics and Physical Sciences at
the University of Exeter, UK. The centre has close working affiliations
with the Met Office and the Hadley Centre.
We are inviting applications for a PhD studentship to start in October
2012 on modelling and analysing atmospheric variability using data-based
statistical-dynamical methods. The project will be supervised by Dr
Frank Kwasniok. The studentship will cover tuition fees plus a stipend
at the UK Research Council rate for three years. Full funding is
available only for UK students.
This project is in internal competition for funding via an EPSRC
Doctoral Training Grant. Studentships will be awarded on the basis of merit.
For informal enquiries contact Dr Frank Kwasniok at F.Kwasniok@exeter.ac.uk
Project description:
"Statistical-dynamical analysis and modelling of atmospheric variability"
The project deals with analysis and modelling of atmospheric and climate
variability using data-based statistical-dynamical models. Concepts and
methods from dynamical systems theory, modern time series analysis and
machine learning will be used. Possible directions of investigation are:
prediction and predictability of large-scale weather regimes; prediction
and predictability of extreme weather events; stochastic subgrid-scale
modelling. Studied data sets may range from simple conceptual models, to
intermediate-complexity atmospheric models, to reanalysis or
observational data.
Application criteria:
The successful applicant should have or expect to achieve at least an
upper second class honours degree, or equivalent qualifications, in a
relevant subject such as mathematics, statistics, physics, meteorology,
oceanography or climatology. The candidate should have a keen interest
in the application of mathematical and statistical methods to problems
in weather and climate science, and preferably some experience of
programming in Matlab and/or Fortran.
How to apply:
To apply, go to
http://www.exeter.ac.uk/postgraduate/degrees/maths/research/ and
complete the online web form.
The application deadline is Friday 23 March 2012.

The division of Climate and Environmental Physics in collaboration with
the Space Research and Planetary Sciences, Physics Institute, University
of Bern, Switzerland, opens a position for a PhD student in Atmospheric
Modeling of Habitable Planets.
In the framework of the newly founded Center for Space and Habitability
(CSH) the candidate will explore parameter space in planetary parameters
(size, rotation rate, orbital elements). The basic tool of research is
the Community Earth System Model (CESM) provided by the National Center
for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) and a model of intermediate complexity
(PlanetSimulator, developed by the Meteorological Institute of the
University of Hamburg). The candidate will primarily work with the
atmospheric component of CESM.
Tasks:
- Adapt the atmospheric component of CESM to be applicable for different
planet configurations, e.g., size, orbital parameters, surface
properties, and gas content of the planetary atmosphere.
- Use PlanetSimulator to extensively explore parameter space in
planetary parameters (size, rotation rate, orbital elements).
- Perform sensitivity experiments with CESM with respect to specific
planetary parameters
-Analysis of the atmospheric circulation, eddies, and weather statistics.
Requirements:
- Diploma or Master degree in physics, meteorology, or environmental
sciences.
- Computer skills in some of FORTRAN, MATLAB, R/S-Plus, NCL, and
shell-programming on Unix or Linux platforms.
- Good language skills in English (written and spoken).
- Strong motivation and ability to carry out research in an
interdisciplinary environment.
- Strong reporting skills.
- Knowledge in climate modeling with CESM or PUMA II/PlanetSimulator is
an advantage.
Project location and start:
Climate and Environmental Physics, Physics Institute, University of
Bern, Switzerland.
The project will start on 1st June 2012 or negotiable.
Employment:
The position will be funded for three years. The employment and salary
is subject to the conditions of the Swiss National Science Foundation.
Application:
The application documents contain your Curriculum Vitae, copies of your
Diploma/Master marks/certificate and thesis, as well as a statement of
interest (1 page). Please attach two names of referees (including their
addresses and emails). Applications are considered as they are received.
Please send your detailed application to:
