The National Centre for Atmospheric Science (NCAS) Atmospheric Measurement Summer School 2012 will be held on the Isle of Arran between the 9th and 21st of September. This is a two-week field course aimed at atmospheric science PhD students and early career researchers. Over the two weeks we aim to introduce the basics of atmospheric science and teach scientists how good quality atmospheric measurements are made.

[cid:image001.jpg@01CD2D22.49008040]

The first week of the course is based at the Kildonan Hotel where lectures are given by expert atmospheric scientists on a variety of topics including atmospheric dynamics, weather forecasting, and atmospheric chemistry and physics. For the second week we move north to the Lochranza field centre where the background knowledge gained in the first week forms the basis for practical activities which will give participants hands-on experience of making atmospheric measurements. This is also an excellent opportunity to meet other young researchers working in the same field and network with senior scientists who are experienced in carrying out fieldwork.

The course is aimed primarily at first and second year PhD students but it is also open to early career researchers who are new to atmospheric field work. Supervisors can secure a place for first year students in advance of their PhD start date. To register go to www.ncas.ac.uk/AMSS<http://www.ncas.ac.uk/AMSS> and follow the link to the application form. The course is fully funded for NERC students/researchers and for non-NERC students/researchers the fee will be around ?1000. This includes all accommodation and activities during the course but does not include travel to and from Arran which must be covered by all students. The deadline for registration is 31st May 2012. For more information email the NCAS Education and Development Manager (s.moller@leeds.ac.uk<mailto:s.moller@leeds.ac.uk>) or visit www.ncas.ac.uk/AMSS<http://www.ncas.ac.uk/AMSS>. There is also a poster/flyer available for download from this website if you would like to publicise this event around your department.

Thank you.

To whom it may concerns:

We are looking for a postdoc or PhD student who is interested in doing
experimental fluid dynamics. We offer an initially two year position within an
prestigious German priority program financed by the German Science Foundation
(DFG). The candidate works together with internationally renowned experts in CFD
who validate their codes by using the experimental data from our group.

The cadidate should have a good knowledge in fluid dynamics or geophysical fluid
dynamics. Prior experience in optical measurement techniques is an advantage
(PIV, LIF).

When you are interested please do not hesitate to contact me (address see below).

A postdoctoral or more senior research position(s) in
hydrometeorological modeling is available in the Department of Civil and
Environmental Engineering at Princeton University. The prospective
researcher will develop improved representations of urban hydrological
processes in coupled land-atmosphere models and will perform multi-scale
atmospheric modeling to investigate the effects of urbanization and
other anthropogenic forcings on the water cycle. Of particular interest
are rapidly urbanizing regions in China.

The work will use the Weather Research and Forecasting model for
mesoscale and large-eddy simulations, focusing on storms and
land-atmosphere exchanges of relevance to the hydrological cycle. The
research will be supervised by Professors Jim Smith
(http://hydrometeorology.princeton.edu/) and Elie Bou-Zeid
(http://efm.princeton.edu/).

Applicants from all academic backgrounds will be considered, but
previous experience in atmospheric modeling and/or computational fluid
dynamics is strongly desired. A PhD is required.Interested candidates
are encouraged to apply as soon as possible; the position will remain
open until filled. All applications should be submitted through the
Princeton University jobs site http://jobs.princeton.edu requisition
number 1200261.

Please include a CV, a brief statement of research experience and
interests, and the names and emails of three references. This appointment
is for one year, and may be renewed pending satisfactory performance and
sufficient funding.

Princeton University is an equal opportunity employer and complies with
applicable EEO and affirmative action regulations.
