A fully funded PhD project on air-sea gas exchange under high winds is
available immediately at the University of Leeds.

http://www.see.leeds.ac.uk/admissions-and-study/research-degrees/icas/brooksross/

The PhD is part of a NERC-funded joint project between Leeds, the
National Oceanography Centre, and the University of Southampton, which
is in turn a contribution to a larger US observational programme with
partners at the University of Hawai'i and the NOAA Earth System Research
Laboratory, Boulder, CO., among others.
Eligibility for funding is restricted to UK nationals or EU nationals
resident in the UK (3-years undergraduate study in UK qualifies as resident)

Email i.brooks@see.leeds.ac.uk for informal discussion of the project.
Instructions on formal application procedures can be found at:

http://www.see.leeds.ac.uk/admissions-and-study/research-degrees/how-to-apply/

GreenSeas Summer School
-------------------------
Global plankton data: ecosystems, monitoring and modelling in an era of
global warming

University of Capetown/ Africa House, Capetown, South Africa
28th Jan ? 3rd Feb 2013

http://www.greenseas.eu/content/greenseas-summer-school

Climate change is arguably the greatest challenge facing mankind in the
twenty-first century. The inherent processes, feedback mechanisms and
interactions, can have unprecedented and dramatic impacts on marine
ecology. Phytoplankton is a key component of the marine ecosystem,
fixing atmospheric carbon and providing the primary food source for the
zooplankton, together forming the base of the oceanic food chain. It is
thus necessary to advance our quantitative knowledge of how planktonic
marine ecosystems, will respond to environmental and climate change.

During the GreenSeas Summer School students will learn how to employ a
combination of observation data, environmental indicators and numerical
simulations to obtain an integrated, cross-disciplinary, global-in-scope
understanding of global planktonic ecosystems and their role in a global
information service, of further importance for assessment of
environmental pressures and risks, including tensions and conflicts
related to the depletion of natural resources.

In particular the summer school will include:.

Processes and dynamics of planktonic ecosystems
Sampling and analysis techniques
Analysis of in situ data and data management
Advanced statistical data and time series analysis
Remote sensing techniques and environmental indicators
Ocean modelling and data assimilation
Integrated use of in situ, remote sensing data and simulations

involving theoretical lectures, practical exercises and computational
case studies.

The summer school is primarily aimed at PhD students late in their term
and early PostDocs. If there is an oversubscription students from the
ICPC countries and Europe will have precedence. Accommodation and
expenses at the summer school is fully covered. Students may apply for
full or partial coverage of their travel expenses, subject to further terms.

Students should submit their applications (a web-form) no later than
October 15 2012 to the summer school team. Requests about the summer
school should be directed to summer-school@greenseas.eu.

The Institute for Meteorology of the University of Leipzig has vacancies for

2 Post-Doc positions (m/f) and
1 PhD position (m/f)

within the "High Definition Clouds and Precipitation for Climate
Prediction (HD(CP)2)" project, focusing on cloud-climate feedbacks over
Central Europe, including the exploitation of observational datasets and
global models for model evaluation and parameterisation development; as
well as

1 Post-Doc position (m/f) and
1 PhD position (m/f)

within the ERC-funded "Quantification of Aerosol-Cloud-Climate Effects
by Regime (QUAERERE)" project, aiming at a quantification of the
radiative forcing by aerosol indirect effects from satellite data and
regional and global climate models.

Requirements
- A degree in Meteorology, Atmospheric Sciences or related field (Master
level for the PhD positions, a PhD degree for the Post-Doc positions)
- Programming skills (Linux shell scripts, Fortran, data processing and
visualisation tools such as NCAR command language)
- Good knowledge of the English language (German skills are welcomed)
- Ideally some prior experience with cloud-, aerosol- and/or radiation
physics and/or experience with global models such as ECHAM (HD(CP)2
positions) and/or regional models such as COSMO (ERC post-doc position)

The position is offered for up to three years (up to four years for the
ERC post-doc position), starting as soon as possible. Payment is
according to a civil service position (TVL E13), at 100% for the
Post-Doc- and at 75% for the PhD positions.

Applications include a detailed CV and the names and e-mail addresses of
two references. They will be evaluated until suitable candidates are found.

The University of Leipzig seeks to increase the number of female
scientists and encourages them to apply. Handicapped persons with
comparable qualifications receive preferential status.

Please submit your application or any inquiries to
