Researcher in Data assimilation and ensemble methods, ref no 1671
The research department of SMHI (The Swedish Meteorological and Hydrological Institute) consists of about 100 researchers funded both internally and externally. We work normally in projects with focus on applied research, quality insurance and long-term perspective. The work environment is characterized by flexible working arrangements, responsibility and personal development. The unit ?Meteorological Analysis and Prediction? conducts research and development of weather prediction models, assimilation of observations and applications of forecast data.

We are looking for a senior researcher in the field of meteorology who will, in collaboration with the group, develop research activities in numerical weather prediction by weaving together data assimilation and ensemble methods. Data assimilation defines the initial state for the weather prediction model, while ensemble methods are used for probabilistic forecasts. The researcher will lead the scientific development of an ensemble-based data assimilation system that will improve operational weather forecasts in the long term. Furthermore, the post aims to contribute to the development and implementation of new methods, both for data assimilation, especially flow-dependent, in a regional weather prediction model and for perturbation / verification / interpretation of ensemble forecasts.

The position is permanent at our office in Norrk?ping (Sweden).

Your Profile
The announced position requires knowledge of the physical, mathematical, and numerical aspects of weather prediction models. The work will include scientific publishing, project management, application for research funding and the creation / maintenance of national / international networks. Doctorate degree in natural science / mathematics is beneficial. The job requires also experience and interest in programming, in working with large systems and with a lot of data. Software systems are developed in Fortran with future increased elements of C++. We use Unix / Linux on high-performance cluster computers as well as on desktop computers.

We attach great importance that you are goal-oriented and have a methodical approach. You should take responsibility for progressing your own work. As the work is done in close collaboration with the group of modelers at SMHI and with colleagues at other institutions within and outside Europe, high level of English is required both in spoken and written form. You should also be willing and able to learn Swedish at a working language level within 1 year of starting the position.

Do you want more information?
If you want to know more, please contact Head of Unit ?Meteorological Analysis and Prediction? Heiner K?rnich (heiner.kornich@smhi.se). You can also contact personnel officer Susanne Gullmar. Union representatives is for SACO Lennart Robertsson and for ST Barry Broman. All can be reached at phone +46 11 495 8000 or via email Firstname.Lastname@smhi.se.

Please submit your application marked with reference number 1671 latest October 19, 2012 by e-mail to Registrator@smhi.se or by post to SMHI, SE-601 76 Norrk?ping.

SMHI is an equal opportunity employer.

SMHI informs continuously about the recruitment status on www.smhi.se

The Institute of Environmental Physics and Remote Sensing at the University
of Bremen is offering a PhD position (TVL 13, 50%), starting as soon as
possible for the duration of three years on the topic of

Retrieval of vertical profiles from ground-based MAX-DOAS
observations

The Institute of Environmental Physics at the University of Bremen has been
operating ground-based instruments for remote sensing measurements of
atmospheric trace gases at several stations since 1995. The method used is
based on the Differential Optical Absorption Spectroscopy (DOAS) of
scattered sunlight and allows the detection of a number of tropospheric
trace gases and also the retrieval of their vertical distribution at low
resolution.

In the framework of the EU project NORS, the operation of the measurements
is to be continued and the data analysis to be improved. In particular the
retrieval of vertical profiles should be refined and the ability of a new
generation of instruments observing in many directions should be exploited.
This work builds on existing instruments, data, and algorithms, and will be
executed in close collaboration with other members of the working group.

Requirements:
? A Master or Diploma in Physics or a related discipline
? Very good knowledge in at least one higher programming language
? Interest in data analysis and atmospheric research
? Good knowledge in spoken and written German and / or English
? Good knowledge and experience in at least one of the following
fields: physics and chemistry of the atmosphere, meteorology, remote sensing
of atmospheric composition, radiative transfer, inversion theory

The Institute of Environmental Physics offers a friendly working atmosphere
and excellent working environment. The position is integrated into the
international NORS project http://nors.aeronomie.be/ .

More information on the institute and the DOAS group can be found at
http://www.iup.physik.uni-bremen.de/eng/ and http://www.doas-bremen.de .

As the University of Bremen intends to increase the proportion of female
employees in
science, women are particularly encouraged to apply. In case of equal
personal aptitudes
and qualification priority will be given to disabled persons.

Please direct applications and questions in electronic form until September
30, 2012 to
