Postdoc at University of Colorado: Polar climate and isotopes

Postdoctoral Research Associate

The Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences
(CIRES) at the University of Colorado has an immediate opening for a
Postdoctoral Research Associate to assist in a study of precipitation,
surface mass balance and the stable isotope record of snow on the
Greenland ice sheet. The research seeks to combine atmospheric and
snow surface modeling with data collected from Summit station to
improve understanding of processes that control the isotopic
composition of snow. Expertise in atmospheric modeling and working
with complex datasets is essential. Experience with optical
precipitation probes, eddy covariance methods or cavity enhanced
spectroscopic trace gas measurements is desirable. Other duties will
include assisting in maintaining advanced meteorological and
turbulence instruments at Summit, ensuring flow and management of data
and helping in project reporting. A doctorate in the area of
meteorology or closely related field is required. The ideal candidate
will be a competent scientific programmer (in IDL, Matlab, Fortran, or
Python). The successful candidate will be part of a vibrant research
team at University of Colorado and collaborators in the Boulder
research community.

Further information can be obtained by contacting David Noone
(<dcn@colorado.edu>). Applications should comprise a cover letter that
contains a statement of interest that explains your experience and a
curriculum vitae. Applications should be submitted via email to CIRES
Human research via Karen Depsey (<karen.dempsey@colorado.edu>). Full
consideration will be given to applications received before 1 October
2012, and the position will remain open until filled.

========================================================
Postdoctoral fellowship in sea ice modelling available at UCL,
Louvain-la-Neuve
========================================================

The Georges Lema?tre Centre for Earth and Climate Research (TECLIM;
www.uclouvain.be/teclim) / Earth and Life Institute of the Universit?
catholique de Louvain (UCL, Louvain-la-Neuve, Belgium) is seeking a
postdoctoral fellow for participation to the EU FP7 project EMBRACE
(Earth system model bias reduction and assessing abrupt climate change;
www.smhi.se/embrace/). The key goal of this project is to improve our
ability to simulate the Earth system, thereby enabling more reliable
projections of future climate. This will provide policy makers with a
more concrete evidence base on which to develop climate change
adaptation and mitigation policies, both at regional and global scales.

The research will consist in contributing to the implementation and
validation of an elasto-brittle sea ice rheology in version 3 of the
Louvain-la-Neuve sea ice model (LIM3;
http://www.elic.ucl.ac.be/repomodx/lim/index.php?id=49) coupled to the
NEMO (Nucleous for European Modelling of the Ocean; www.nemo-ocean.eu)
modelling platform for oceanographic research, operational oceanography,
seasonal forecast and climate studies.

This work will be done in collaboration with the Laboratoire de
Glaciologie et de G?ophysique de l'Environnement, Grenoble and other
European laboratories involved or not in EMBRACE. Frequent visits to
those laboratories are expected.

The candidates should have a PhD in large-scale sea ice and/or ocean
modelling. Expertise in sea ice rheology will be a plus.

The position is offered for 1 year. The salary will be commensurate with
experience according to the UCL rates.

Expected date for entry on duty: beginning of December 2012.

Applicants should send (i) a statement of research experience,
qualifications and interests, (ii) a complete CV including a list of
publications, and (iii) contact information for three references via
e-mail to Prof. Thierry Fichefet (thierry.fichefet@uclouvain.be).

Review of applications will begin on September 17, 2012 and continue
until the position is filled.

The Institute of Environmental Physics (IFE/IUP) at the University of Bremen offers
two PhD (German pay scale: E13 TV-L 50%)
and
one postdoc position (German pay scale: E13 TV-L 100%)
on a time limited contract.
The Atmospheric Chemistry and Physics branch of IUP (headed by Prof. John Burrows) has a long standing experience in the fields of satellite remote sensing of atmospheric trace gases (stratospheric ozone and related species, greenhouse gases, and air quality) and long-term variability of spectral solar irradiances.
Position A: PhD student, three year contract. As part of the DFG (national science foundation) Research Unit SHARP-OCF (ozone climate feedback), see www.geo.fu-berlin.de/v/sharp/en/index.html advanced studies on the connection between Brewer-Dobson circulation and ozone in a changing climate using observational and climate model data shall be carried out.
Position B: PhD student, three year contract (subject to final approval of funding agency). As a preparation for the Sentinel 5P mission TROPOMI (launch in 2015) existing retrieval algorithms for tropospheric ozone are adapted and tested using existing satellite data from SCIAMACHY, GOME-2, and OMI.
Position C: Postdoc, two year contract (subject to final approval of funding agency). Within the new EU project SOLID (First European Comprehensive SOLar Irradiance Data exploitation) an extensive database of spectral solar irradiance data and associated solar proxy data shall be developed. A particular emphasis will be put on assessing the long-term stability of the existing data as well as providing a suitable error budget for the available data. Such a database will be very valuable for studies investigating the solar impact on earth?s climate. Part of his/her work will also contribute to studies on improving the quality of and harmonizing the solar spectral irradiance data
