The Bureau of Meteorology is Australia's national weather, climate and water agency. Its expertise and services assist Australians in dealing with the harsh realities of their natural environment, including droughts, floods, fires, storms, tsunami and tropical cyclones. Through regular forecasts, warnings, monitoring and advice spanning the Australian region and Antarctic territory, the Bureau provides one of the fundamental and most widely used services of government.
The Bureau contributes to national social, economic, cultural and environmental goals by providing observational, meteorological, hydrological and oceanographic services and by undertaking research into science and environment related issues in support of its operations and services.
The Bureau has multiple employment opportunities for qualified Meteorologists with operational forecasting experience to join the team in the Regional Forecasting Centre (RFC) of Perth, Western Australia.
The Perth RFC is staffed by a professional team of meteorologists providing critical services for the general public, aviation industry, marine community, Government agencies and instrumentalities (eg. Emergency Services) and other commercial and non-commercial users. Western Australia?s varied climate provides opportunity for meteorologists to work in tropical and mid-latitude environments dealing with a wide range of weather systems including tropical cyclones, cold fronts, severe thunderstorms and dangerous wild fires.
As a member of a forecasting team, the successful applicant will use professional knowledge to analyse meteorological data and interpret guidance material from numerical weather prediction models, participate in the formulation of Regional forecast policy and, in accordance with that policy, prepare forecasts and warnings for the general community, aviation, Government agencies and instrumentalities (eg. State/Territory Emergency Services), and other commercial and non-commercial users. Monitor forecasts against observed conditions to provide weather watch and provide timely amendments as necessary.
