PhD opportunities in Climate System Science

Deadline: August 16 (international applicants).
Deadline: September 30 (Australian and New Zealand citizens, Australian permanent residents).

The Australian Research Council Centre of Excellence for Climate System Science is an international research consortium of five Australian universities (The University of New South Wales, Monash University, The University of Melbourne, The University of Tasmania and The Australian National University) and a suite of outstanding national and international Partner Organizations.

Research is particularly focused in the following five areas:

* The effects of tropical convection on Australia's climate.

* Risks, mechanisms and the attribution of changes in Australian climate extremes.

* The role of land surface forcing and feedbacks for regional climate.

* Drivers of spatial and temporal variability in extratropical Australia.

* Mechanisms and attribution of past and future ocean circulation change.

We offer graduate opportunities with world leading climate scientists. Many projects are supervised across universities and/or co-supervised by experts from the CSIRO, Bureau of Meteorology or one of our international partners.

Outstanding students may receive top-up funding above the rates of standard Australian government PhD scholarships (currently ~$25k/year).

Generous travel support exists for students to visit our international partners.

We currently offer at least three $10,000 PhD top-up scholarships for projects that focus specifically on climate or weather model development. Students may be based at any university in the ARC Centre of Excellence although this will depend on where Centre expertise is focused. Click for more information<http://www.climatescience.org.au/content/255-coecss-positions#PhD%20top-up%20scholarships>.

Expressions of interest are encouraged in any area of the Centre's research focus (for additional opportunities see: <www.climatescience.org.au/content/postgraduate-and-honours-projects<http://www.climatescience.org.au/content/postgraduate-and-honours-projects>>). Targeted scholarships are currently available in the following areas:

1. Urban climate: The impacts of urbanisation on local climates and the parameterization of urban surfaces in regional climate models. More information: Melissa Hart<http://www.climatescience.org.au/staff/profile/mhart>.

2. Land surface: Focus on one aspect of terrestrial processes and their parameterization in regional or global climate models. This could be lined to hydrology, how crops are simulated or can be focused on areas of personal interest to the student. More information: Andy Pitman<http://www.climatescience.org.au/staff/profile/apitman>.

3. Physical oceanography: This group is targeting outstanding maths/physics graduates, focused on understanding the physics of the global ocean circulation and its role in climate. More information: Matthew England<http://www.climatescience.org.au/staff/profile/mengland>, Andy Hogg<http://www.climatescience.org.au/staff/profile/ahogg>.

4. Biological oceanography:

1. How do eddies impact oceanic carbon cycling? Analyse optical data from autonomous profiling floats, surface satellite observations and ship-based CO2 data. More information: Peter Strutton<http://www.climatescience.org.au/staff/profile/pstrutton>

2. Inter-annual variability in tropical Pacific phytoplankton populations, using an eight-year time series of bio-optical measurements from the tropical Pacific. More information: Peter Strutton<http://www.climatescience.org.au/staff/profile/pstrutton>

To apply please send the following information to Graduate Director- Dr Melissa Hart (coecss.grad@unsw.edu.au<mailto:coecss.grad@unsw.edu.au>) :

a) CV,

b) Statement of research interest including the project(s)/ area of research you are interested in,

c) Academic transcripts including details of grading procedures at your university,

d) Copies of any publications.

The Department of Environmental Sciences at the University of Virginia
(UVA) seeks a Postdoctoral Research Associate in the fields of
atmospheric boundary layer meteorology and the carbon cycle. The
post-doctoral fellow will work on a recently funded proposal with
Stephan de Wekker at UVA in Charlottesville, Virginia, and Andy Jacobson
at NOAA ESRL in Boulder, Colorado. The research aims to 1) evaluate the
performance of atmospheric transport models that drive global carbon
inverse models in their simulation of PBL depths, 2) improve the
representation of PBL depths in these models, and 3) assess the impact
of an improved representation on the calculation of the North American
carbon budget. Observations will be combined with numerical models,
including the community model WRF and the carbon data assimilation
system CarbonTracker.

The ideal candidate will have a background in atmospheric transport
modeling (at meso-to-global scales), boundary layer meteorology and a
demonstrated record of research in areas relevant to this position. The
candidate should also have extensive experience with data analysis and
visualization (including the ability to program in Fortran and
IDL/Matlab) and numerical models (e.g. WRF). This appointment may be
renewed annually for a maximum of three years, contingent upon
satisfactory performance and the availability of research funds.

The completion of a Ph.D. in Atmospheric Sciences or related field is
required by anticipated appointment start date of September 15, 2013.

To apply, complete a Candidate Profile through Jobs@UVa
(https://jobs.virginia.edu) and electronically attach the following: a
cover letter describing research experience and interests, a curriculum
vitae, and contact information for three (3) references; search on
posting number 0612579.

Review of complete applications will begin August 15, 2013; however, the
position will remain open until filled.

Questions regarding this position should be directed to:
Stephan de Wekker
dewekker@virginia.edu

Questions regarding the Candidate Profile process or Jobs@UVa should be
directed to:
Rachel Short

The University of Virginia is an affirmative action/equal opportunity
employer committed to diversity, equity, and inclusiveness.
