Empa is a Swiss Science and Technology Institution of the ETH-Domain. The Laboratory for Air Pollution / Environmental Technology has an opening for a

PhD Candidate on Identification of N2O sources and hot spots in Northern Switzerland by isotopic analysis

Nitrous oxide (N2O) is a strong greenhouse gas and the most important anthropogenic ozone depleting substance emitted this century. Its global budget is rather uncertain due to a very limited understanding of the dominant N2O sources. These sources can be better understood based on the study of their isotopic signature.

The Emissions & Isotopes group at Empa is looking for a highly motivated PhD candidate on real-time analysis of N2O isotopomers by laser spectroscopy and source attribution by inverse modelling techniques.

The successful candidate will perform for the first time continuous atmospheric N2O isotope measurements at the Berom?nster tall tower. The observations will be combined with atmospheric transport and inverse modelling to determine the temporal and spatial variability of N2O source strengths and isotopic signatures in northern Switzerland.

The PhD position is embedded in a multi-disciplinary research project in co-operation with the KIT in Garmisch-Partenkirchen (Dr. Ralf Kiese, Prof. Dr. Klaus Butterbach Bahl). N2O isotope measurements by the Empa PhD student will be used to validate a biogeochemical soil model developed by a PhD candidate at KIT.

The PhD position is immediately available for a candidate with an excellent master?s degree in chemistry, environmental sciences or a related discipline, and a strong interest in analytical chemistry, atmospheric transport and data analysis.

We offer a highly stimulating research environment with excellent infrastructure and broad interdisciplinary surrounding. Working place is D?bendorf. The PhD-student will be registered at ETH, in the group of Sustainable Agroecosystems (Prof. J. Six) of the Institute of Agricultural Sciences (IAS).

For further information contact Dr. Joachim Mohn, phone +41 58 765 4687, e?mail: joachim.mohn@empa.ch

Applications should be accompanied by a CV, a letter of motivation and addresses of two referees and submitted online at www.empa.ch/job.
