Subject: 12-16 PhD projects - SCENARIO NERC Doctoral Training Partnership

http://www.reading.ac.uk/nercdtp

The SCENARIO NERC Doctoral Training Partnership (DTP) at the Universities of Reading and Surrey invites applications for 12-16 fully funded PhD studentships starting in September 2015. NERC funding is only available to UK citizens and other EU citizens meeting the RCUK residence requirements. The studentships cover fees, training, research expenses, conference attendance and a tax free maintenance grant. SCENARIO seeks to attract high-quality graduates from science, mathematics and engineering degrees.

The scope of SCENARIO is broad, spanning the science of the atmosphere, oceans, ice, hydrology, soil, biosphere and space weather. As a SCENARIO DTP student you can expect to receive excellent training in quantitative environmental science, research skills and a wider set of professional skills in preparation for a leading role in science, industry, the public sector or academia. SCENARIO has many partners from industry and the public sector who offer co-supervision and opportunities for placement work related to your PhD research. Look for details of CASE sponsorship in the project adverts.

For a full list of available PhD projects and details on how to apply, please visit our website: http://www.reading.ac.uk/nercdtp

The deadline for applications is February 2, 2015.

FACULTY POSITION IN METEOROLOGY

School of Meteorology

College of Atmospheric and Geographic Sciences

The University of Oklahoma

The School of Meteorology at the University of Oklahoma invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position at the Assistant Professor level to begin in the academic year 2015-2016. The School is seeking an excellent candidate with the ability to establish, lead and sustain a strong and vibrant research program in one or more of the following areas: weather, climate, remote sensing and/or other potential specialties applicable to the department's atmospheric science program. Applicants also should have a commitment to teaching excellence at the undergraduate and graduate levels plus a strong desire to participate in service to the School, University, and atmospheric science community. The context for this hire is that the weather, water, climate, and radar engineering are the University of Oklahoma?s highest priorities for strategic investment. The University has added more than $100 million in new facilities during the past several years including a new 35,000 sq. ft. state-of-the-art Radar Innovations Laboratory. In addition, the University was recently selected as home to the Department of the Interior?s South Central Regional Climate Science Center. A major program of interdisciplinary study has also been initiated in the social, human, behavioral, and economic aspects of weather and climate in collaboration with the University?s Center for Applied Social Research. The National Weather Center, one of the largest facilities of its kind in the world, houses the University?s academic and research programs in meteorology, state organizations, and the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration?s Norman-based weather research and operational programs. The School of Meteorology is an academic unit of the College of Atmospheric and Geographic Sciences with 25 faculty and nearly 90 graduate students.

To apply, please submit a letter of interest together with a statement of research goals and teaching vision, current curriculum vitae, and the names of four or more people who can serve as references (with full mailing and e-mail addresses, telephone, and fax numbers). [cid:image002.jpg@01D0107D.C61AB5A0]Regional Ocean Modelling System (ROMS) Numerical Modeller

* Based in Wellington, New Zealand

* Permanent, full-time
NIWA is a dynamic research organisation whose purpose is to enhance the economic value and sustainable management of New Zealand's aquatic resources and environments, to provide understanding of climate and the atmosphere and increase resilience to weather and climate hazards to improve safety and wellbeing of New Zealanders. NIWA uses ROMS (Regional Ocean Modelling System) to describe and quantify processes in the open ocean and shelf-sea regions of New Zealand's waters for a wide range of scientific research and commercial objectives.
We are seeking an enthusiastic and skilled numerical ocean modeller to consolidate, develop, and expand our present expertise and range of services with ROMS. As part of an interdisciplinary cross-campus team, the modeller will use ROMS, as well as available observations, to characterize transport and variability in the open ocean and coastal zones for New Zealand's waters. The modelling will potentially also encompass dispersal (biota, oil, and sediment), biological productivity, biogeochemical transformation, and physical processes of critical importance to past, present and future states of the oceanic domain around New Zealand. The modeller will also be involved in the development and production of multi-scale boundary conditions for coast to embayment scale models.
With a PhD degree in oceanography and/or numerical ocean modelling, candidates should have experience in modelling oceanic processes with ROMS and modern analytical methods for analysing ocean model output and datasets. They should also have strong analytical skills; an excellent background in computing (Windows, Unix, Fortran, and a scientific scripting language such as Matlab, IDL or Python), along with proven ability to publish scientific papers in international, peer-reviewed journals and strong communication skills.

As an engaged team player, the successful candidate will enjoy working with project groups across NIWA's sites, communicating positively and productively with a wide range of staff. They will be self-motivated and results-orientated, conscientious and well organised, with a keen eye for detail.

We provide an excellent work environment, offer competitive remuneration and benefits, free parking and an attractive waterfront location at Greta Point.
Applications close on Monday, 12 January 2015.
A job description, online applications and further information about NIWA can be found at https://careers.sciencenewzealand.org/niwa/niwa-jobs
For informal inquiries please contact Graham Rickard (graham.rickard@niwa.co.nz<mailto:graham.rickard@niwa.co.nz>) in Wellington.
