Applications are invited for the MSc program in Atmospheric and Climate
Science, ETH Zurich, Switzerland.

-> The program: the 1.5-year program in Atmospheric and Climate Science
aims to educate outstanding young scientists for careers in academia,
public administration and the private sector. Students gain in-depth
understanding of climate processes and their interactions ? ranging from
the molecular to the global scale and from short-lived phenomena to
changes over millions of years. The program offers quantitative
knowledge on atmospheric dynamics, climate processes and feedbacks,
biogeochemical cycles, paleoclimatology and in-depth training in
numerical modelling of weather and climate. More information can be
found at <www.iac.ethz.ch/edu/prospective/>.

-> The institutes: the program is offered by world-leading institutes in
the field of atmospheric physics, chemistry and dynamics, and global and
regional climate change (e.g. <www.iac.ethz.ch/>, <www.clidyn.ethz.ch/>,
<www.up.ethz.ch/> or <www.climategeology.ethz.ch/>). During the second
half of the program students are directly involved in the research
groups and receive individual supervision and training.

-> The university: ETH offers students a comprehensive education and an
inspiring research environment as one of the leading international
universities for natural sciences and technology. ETH regularly appears
at the top of international rankings as one of the best universities in
the world. Students benefit from an unusually high faculty-to-student
ratio, attractive tuition fees, leading-edge research infrastructure,
and a city with a high standard of living.

-> Who can apply: anyone with a BSc degree in natural sciences or
related fields and a strong background in mathematics, physics and/or
chemistry. The application window for fall 2014 is open until 15
December, 2014 (for applicants for a scholarship
<www.ethz.ch/en/studies/financial/scholarships.html/> or who need a
visa) and until 30 March, 2015 (for all other applicants) at

Climatology/Biogeochemical modeling

The Earth & Environmental Sciences Department at Lehigh University has
an opening for a graduate student (MS or PhD) starting in August as part
of a newly NSF-funded project aimed at understanding the role of
predictability of climate disasters such as floods and droughts on human
societies. The student will have the opportunity to work with climate
data and indices of climate extremes related to prehistoric,
preindustrial, and contemporary civilizations. The student will be able
to develop their own project within the overall project objectives,
including applications to ecosystem modeling. Ideal candidates will have
quantitative and/or computer programming skills and background in
physics, statistics, or climate science. Application deadline is January
1. For more information, including link to online application, please
goto <http://bfelzer.cas2.lehigh.edu/> or contact Benjamin Felzer
(bsf208@lehigh.edu <mailto:bsf208@lehigh.edu>).

The Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences (CIRES)
at the University of Colorado Boulder, is seeking a Research Associate
(?postdoctoral researcher?) to work in the NOAA Earth System Research
Laboratory (ESRL) Physical Sciences Division (PSD) on studies examining
sea ice variability and predictability, both locally and within the
global climate system.

The position responsibilities include conducting both statistical
analyses and modeling experiments aimed at improved understanding of sea
ice variability, including its predictability and its interactions with
the broader climate system on seasonal to interannual timescales. Of
particular interest is quantifying the potential two-way interactions
between sea ice variations and changes in extratropical weather and
climate and related extreme events. The candidate will diagnose both
observations and global climate model (GCM) output, conduct GCM
simulations, and employ other tools such as statistical and/or dynamical
models. The position involves working with a team at CIRES/NOAA ESRL and
the Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Laboratory (GFDL); it is anticipated that
the research will involve GFDL?s suite of climate models.

Requirements
? PhD with detailed knowledge of one or more of the following
disciplines: atmospheric sciences, sea ice physics and dynamics, and
physical
oceanography.
? Specific expertise in one or more of the following areas is desired:
climate and geophysical fluid dynamics; climate diagnostics; climate
models and
their applications; and statistical methods.
? Experience analyzing large datasets and model output
? Ability to design and conduct model experiments is desirable
? Conduct original research, publish in peer-reviewed journals, and give
presentations of research at science conferences
? Knowledge of and experience with: analysis/graphics packages (e.g.
NCL), geophysical data formats (NetCDF), programming language (Fortran),
and
operating systems (Linux/mac OSX).
