The Coastal Research Group at the ICBM (Institute for Chemistry and Biology of the Marine Environment), Carl von Ossietzky University Oldenburg, offers a

4-year PhD position
(E13 TV-L/69%)

within an interdisciplinary consortium of marine physicists, biologists and oceanographic modelers working in the project "Coastal Ocean Darkening" (COD) financed by the Ministry for Science and Culture of Lower Saxony. A short description of the project can be found at:http://www.icbm.de/en/scientific-projects/coastal-ocean-darkening/

In the COD project the Coastal Research Group is responsible for performing numerical simulations in the area of North-West European shelf with a focus on the North Sea, using coupled physical - biogeochemical model with up-to-date parameterization of light absorption. Process studies will estimate the sensitivity of light in the North Sea upon different factors such as circulation, wave-regime, and biological processes. Light availability and its changes both in the coastal and open-ocean waters will also be studied. Hindcast and scenario simulations will be performed to analyze the evolution of light climate in the last 100 years, as well as its future evolution in the next 100 years.

We are looking for a candidate holding a Master (M.Sc.) or diploma degree (academic university degree) in physics, mathematics or physical oceanography. Experience in ocean circulation modelling using state-of-the-art ocean models is mandatory. Additionally, the candidate should have a strong expertise in programming languages, like FORTRAN and MATLAB, Linux operating systems and parallel cluster environments. Appropriate candidates holding a PhD degree will be considered for a PostDoc position

The University of Oldenburg is dedicated to increase the percentage of female employees in the field of science. Therefore, female candidates are strongly encouraged to apply. In accordance to § 21 Section 3 NHG, female candidates with equal qualifications will be preferentially considered. People with disabilities will be given preference if equally qualified.

Please send your application including a cover letter, copies of your certificates (including a list of your most relevant publications if you want to be considered for a PostDoc position) and a CV as a single pdf-file not exceeding 10 MByte via e-mail to our team assistant Mrs. Ursel Gerken (ursel.gerken@uni-oldenburg.de<mailto:ursel.gerken@uni-oldenburg.de>) and in copy to the principal investigator Prof. Dr. Emil Stanev (emil.stanev@hzg.de<mailto:emil.stanev@hzg.de>). All applications must be submitted by May 18th 2016. Our ideal starting date would be August 1st 2016.

Based at the Strand Campus this post is based within the research team of Professor Martin Wooster and focused on the study of biomass burning and their emissions to the atmosphere. Whilst based at King's, the appointee will also be affiliated the NERC National Centre for Earth Observation (NCEO).

The post holder will work on development, use and exploitation of satellite data, alongside other environmental datasets. They will study particular biomass burning episodes, most likely those exacerbated by the recent (and currently ongoing) El Nino event, and will exploit new fire radiative power (FRP) measurements now provided by geostationary and polar orbiting spacecraft. Some improvement of algorithms required to turn the 'raw' satellite thermal observations into information on active fires maybe required.

Applicants should have strong experience of working with satellite data/ products and be able to code in Python and/or IDL. Experience of working with a combination of datasets to investigate particular environmental phenomena will be a significant advantage, in order to develop definitive records of particular biomass burning episodes.

Based at the Strand Campus this appointment is associated with a NERC funded research project and with the EUMETSAT funded development of fire radiative power (FRP) products from geostationary satellites. Whilst based at King's, the appointee will also be affiliated the NERC National Centre for Earth Observation (NCEO).

The post holder will work on (i) development, use, validation and exploitation of satellite remote sensing data related to landscape biomass burning, alongside other environmental datasets OR (ii) use of open path FTIR spectroscopy and associated techniques for the investigation of biomass burning smoke constituents (gases and particles). A mix of both aspects will also be considered, depending on expertise.

The applicant should either have experience of working with polar orbiting and/or geostationary active fire remote sensing data in particular, but also potentially burned area datasets. Ideally they will be able to contribute to the development of improvements in active fire detection algorithms. They should understand in detail how such data can be converted into estimates of fuel consumption and smoke emissions, for use in atmospheric modelling. Or the candidate should have experience of operating equipment in the field, of the measurement principles of gases and aerosols in pollutant plumes. The ability to undertake fieldwork and to work effectively with other types of environmental instrumentation will also be a valuable skill for both work areas.

The Space and Atmospheric Physics group at Imperial College London and the Global Change Research Institute at the University of Edinburgh seek a highly motivated researcher to fill a
24 month PDRA position (with potential to extend to 30 months), to start immediately.
The successful candidate will participate in an exciting new project entitled International Collaboration for the Exploitation of Infrared Measurements of PolAr ClimaTe (ICE-IMPACT). The goal of the project is to bring together researchers from the UK, US and Italy to make progress in determining the role of infrared radiation, specifically far-infrared (FIR) radiation, in controlling the radiative energy budget in polar regimes.
You will have the opportunity to interpret unique aircraft and ground-based datasets from the Arctic and Antarctica, using these data to evaluate theoretical estimates of ice and snow surface emissivity which are being developed for next generation Earth-System Models (ESMs). You will also use the observations to test and potentially improve recently developed schemes which seek to infer outgoing FIR spectral radiation at the top of the atmosphere from mid-infrared satellite observations. Ultimately the observationally based tools you develop will be used to assess the performance of the soon to be released UKESM in terms of its ability to replicate surface, water vapour, cloud and radiation co-dependencies in the polar regions.
You will be based first in London (working with Dr Helen Brindley) and then in Edinburgh (working with Professor Simon Tett) but the project will also involve extended stays in Florence, Italy and Michigan, USA. You will be expected to regularly publish papers in refereed journals and give presentations at relevant UK and international meetings and conferences. The post will be affiliated to NERC's National Centre for Earth Observation.
You should have a PhD (or be near completion) in atmospheric physics or a closely related subject, ideally in the area of satellite remote sensing and/or atmospheric radiative transfer. You should also have published peer-reviewed papers in the scientific literature. Computing skills are essential; experience in the analysis of large Earth observation/climate data records and/or climate modelling would also be a distinct advantage.
For further information and to make a formal application go to: http://www.imperial.ac.uk/job-applicants/ (Please select "Job Search", then enter vacancy reference number NS2016072NT into "Keywords").
Should you have any queries about the application process please contact the Space and Atmospheric Physics Group Administration office via space.sec@imperial.ac.uk<mailto:space.sec@imperial.ac.uk>. Informal enquiries about the post are welcomed and can be addressed to Dr Helen Brindley (h.brindley@imperial.ac.uk<mailto:h.brindley@imperial.ac.uk>).
