Vacancy of a PhD position at the Institute of Meteorology and Climate Research (IMK-TRO) at Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) in Karlsruhe, Germany

One focus of current and future research activities of IMK-TRO are essential issues to multiscale atmospheric processes over heterogeneous terrain -

particularly processes which lead from land-surface variations or complex terrain via convection initiation and boundary layer - mid troposphere coupling to deep convection with precipitation.

Within the framework of the second phase of the BMBF-funded project HDCP2 (http://www.hdcp2.eu/index.php?id=mission), the 'land-surface processes and boundary layer group' of IMK-TRO (http://www.imk-tro.kit.edu/english/782.php) intents to investigate this boundary layer - mid troposphere coupling and its impact on the evolution of deep convection. For this, data analysis and model simulations with the newly developed ICON model (http://www.mpimet.mpg.de/en/science/models/icon/) will be performed to achieve a better understanding of this coupling, which is important for a better estimation of the occurrence and strength of convection and its influence on heavy precipitation events. This includes the quantification of boundary layer - troposphere coupling and the connection between coupling and regions of convection initiation and intensity. It will be important to determine the required resolution of both the model grid size and land-surface parameters to adequately represent this coupling and ensuing convection development in lower resolution ICON simulations.

For these activities we are looking for a PhD student.

Our conditions of employment:

Successful candidates must have a university degree in meteorology or related subject (Diploma or M. Sc.). A strong background in atmospheric physics and experience in atmospheric modeling is also necessary. You should have a solid knowledge in scientific programming preferably in FORTRAN and model data visualization.

Written and oral communication skills sufficient to author manuscripts and present research at conferences are desirable.

Experience in boundary layer meteorology and modeling as well as good knowledge of GrADS or matlab are also desirable.

Your individual interests are enthusiasm in performing model simulations with the newly developed ICON in LES mode.

Position: PhD

Contract period: 3 years

Begin of contract: July 1st, 2016 or earlier

You have further questions?

Please ask Dr. Norbert Kalthoff, Tel: +49 721 608 24230, email: norbert.kalthoff@kit.edu<mailto:norbert.kalthoff@kit.edu>

Please send your complete application documents (CV, university certificate, etc.) to: norbert.kalthoff@kit.edu<mailto:norbert.kalthoff@kit.edu>

Vacant position at the Swedish Meteorological and Hydrological Institute (SMHI)

Researcher at the Air Quality unit

The air quality research unit at SMHI currently counts 10 researchers. Our research and development focus on three main areas: 1. atmospheric aerosols and their coupling to climate change 2. dispersion and effects of air pollutants from anthropogenic and natural sources on regional to hemispheric scales and 3. urban air quality and associated human health impacts. Most of our projects include international collaboration.

SMHI employs a modelling system that couples large-scale modelling domains with finer urban and local scales. For the regional to hemispheric scale, 3-dimensional chemistry transport models are used.

We are looking for you who can strengthen the expertise of our group and contribute to the development and application of regional scale dispersion models. This means that you will work in close collaboration with scientists in our unit and other groups at the research department at SMHI who are involved in high resolution modelling for weather forecasting and climate studies.

The position will be based at SMHI in Norrköping, a mid-sized city located 160 km southwest of Stockholm which is reachable by train in slightly more than one hour.

Your profile:

You have a doctoral degree in science, mathematics or a related discipline. Experience in atmospheric modelling, atmospheric chemistry, aerosol dynamics and meteorology is desirable. Good programming skills (scripting languages and Fortran or related) is necessary.

Meriting qualifications:

- experience in the field of data assimilation

- experience in scientific programming and handling of supercomputers

- experience with using, aggregating and evaluating emission data

- experience in analysis of observations related to air quality

- capability to initiate and obtain external research funding

- leading research projects and experience in supervision of Ph.D. students

- forming part of established national and international network

- proven publication record and ability to communicate scientific results

You must have good communication skills in English (both verbal and written) and knowledge of other languages is an advantage. If you do not speak Swedish, we expect you to be willing to learn.

For more information:

Please contact the head of the Air Quality Unit, Lars Gidhagen or Karin Aspeqvist, HR department. Union representatives are Ronald Scheirer for ST and Lennart Robertson for SACO. They can be contacted by phone +46 11 4958000 or by e-mail firstname.surname@smhi.se<mailto:firstname.surname@smhi.se>

Your application:

Please submit your application with reference number 869 latest by May 18th 2016 via e-mail to registrator@smhi.se<mailto:registrator@smhi.se> or by ordinary post to Registrator, SMHI, SE-60176, Norrköping, Sweden.

SMHI aims for a diverse work force where the background, experiences, knowledge and personality of our employees enriches our work. The update on the status of this vacancy can be found at www.smhi.se<http://www.smhi.se/>
