ForWind, the joint Center for Wind Energy Research of the Universities of Oldenburg, Hannover and Bremen, is conducting research in a wide spectrum of engineering and physics. ForWind provides scientific support for the wind energy industry by joint research and development projects.

The Energy Meteorology group of ForWind at the Institute of Physics of the Carl von Ossietzky University of Oldenburg offers
a PhD position (TV-L E13, 75%).

The offered position is limited until October 31st, 2019.

The topical foci of the work are the
Investigation of the interaction between the stable atmospheric boundary layer and wind energy converters as well as the analysis of the power performance of wind energy converters by the means of the footprint methodology.

Your project
The offered position belongs to the research project "Heterogeneous high-performance computer for wind energy-related meteorological and flow calculations (WIMS cluster)", which is funded by BMWi. Within the project a new high-performance computing cluster (HPC) explicitly designed for CFD applications and consisting out of about 3000 cores will be acquired. For the further development of CFD codes for applications in wind energy two positions in addition to the position offered here will be available in the project. Another position has been funded in order to secure the support of the users in porting, parallelizing and optimizing their codes.

Your tasks
First of all, the successful applicant will work on an extensive validation of the large-eddy simulation model PALM for the stable atmospheric boundary layer. The comparisons will be based on cases of the stable atmospheric boundary-layer documented in literature, data from measurements already available at ForWind as well as data from the measurements at the experimental site planned by the National Research Alliance for Wind Energy. If required, the code, especially its part dealing with the parametrization of the impact of the non-resolved on the resolved scales, shall be modified. In a next step the coupling between PALM and the aeroelastic code FAST, which has been developed for several years, shall be further optimized, so that using this method even simulations of whole wind farms become feasible. Next, applying the optimized model, the interaction of wind energy converters with the atmospheric boundary layer in case of a stable stratification shall be investigated. The focus of this study will be on the impact of low-level jets on loads acting on a wind turbine.
Finally, applying PALM a method shall be developed with which the footprint of wind energy converters can be determined. A corresponding method aims at e.g. identifying disturbing elements in the surface area influencing the flow through the rotor-swept area of a wind turbine. This might be an innovative method. to explain the differences in the power performance between two adjacent wind turbines. Data from the experimental test site of the National Research Alliance for Wind Energy will be available for the verification of the footprint methodology developed.

Your profile
You have obtained a master or diploma degree from a university in meteorology, physics or a related discipline with an above average grade. Moreover, you have a deep knowledge on the simulation of atmospheric flows. Experiences in the fields of statistical analysis of large data sets, quality control of meteorological measurements as well as in the highly interdisciplinary field of wind energy research and basic knowledge in load simulations for wind energy converters are advantageous. Other requirements are the ability and willingness to do a PhD, the willingness to work in a team and good English skills. You should have extensive knowledge of programming, preferably in Fortran.

The Carl von Ossietzky University of Oldenburg aims to increase the share of women in science. Therefore, women are strongly encouraged to apply for the offered position. According to § 21 paragraph 3 NHG female candidates will be given preference in case of equal qualification with male applicants. Severely disabled persons with equal qualifications will be given preference.

Contact
Your application with the usual documents (CV, diploma or master certificate, references) should be sent quoting the registration number ENMET-16-1-WIND until August 22nd, 2016, preferably by e-mail to gerald.steinfeld@uni-oldenburg.de or by mail to ForWind - Center for Wind Energy Research, attn: Dr. Gerald Steinfeld, Küpkersweg 70, 26129 Oldenburg, Germany. Please enclose a summary of recent theses and any existing publications with your application.
For more information about the advertised position you are welcome to contact Dr. Gerald Steinfeld, Phone +49-0441-798-5073.
