Dear colleague,
Could you please advertize the following postdoc opening at CNRM-GAME.
Best regards,
Herv? Douville

CALL FOR APPLICATION
12-MONTH POSTDOCTORAL FELLOWSHIP AT CNRM-GAME (Toulouse, France)

Applications are invited for a 12-month postdoctoral position starting
in January 2012, in the climate research group of the CNRM-GAME in
Toulouse (France) to work on the following subject: "Multi-model
analysis of cold spells and heat waves over Europe in CMIP5 global
climate scenarios". The deadline for application is November 30th 2011.

Framework:

This position is funded by the French ANR (National Research Agency).
The SECIF project principally targets the implementation of a service
for the industrial sector using examples from both energy and water
sectors but it could be generalized later to other sectors. More
precisely, it consists in identifying:
- the needs of the industrial sectors in terms of climate change
vulnerability;
- the level of appropriate information that climatologists will have to
provide in order to deal with the industrial needs;
- the actors organisation that will be able to face those needs using
the association of industrial companies, research institutes, consulting
and knowledge companies.

One goal of the project is to assess the confidence level associated to
the model results and the
limits of the exercise dedicated to the industrial vulnerability
aspects. At CNRM-GAME, this question will be addressed using both a
multi-model analysis of present-day performance and future projections
of CMIP5 models regarding the simulation of cold spells and heat waves
over Europe, as well as possible case studies using the Arp?ge-Climat
atmospheric GCM driven by prescribed sea surface temperature in order to
assess the reproducibility of recent climate extremes over Europe (e.g.
cold winter 2009-2010, dry spring 2011).

Besides CMIP5 model outputs, more idealized experiments (CFMIP2) using
the same atmospheric GCMs driven by prescribed SST anomalies (uniform
+4K warming or CMIP3 multi-model ensemble mean pattern) will be also
analysed in order to better understand the uncertainties in the response
of daily minimum and maximum temperatures over Europe. Moreover, a
weather regime approach will be used to partition the model errors
(model minus observations) and responses (future minus present-day
climate) into large-scale circulation and regional (e.g. cloud and
land-surface) processes.

Work description:

The proposed work will mainly consist in the following tasks :
1) Select and prepare the monthly and daily observations and model
outputs necessary for the study;
2) Implement statistical tools such as a cluster analysis of daily
geopotential height over North Atlantic (weather regimes) and lead-lag
composite analyses;
3) Develop and apply process-oriented diagnostics for the understanding
of both model biases and projections of temperature variability over Europe;
4) Write project reports and scientific articles, and give presentations
in SECIF meetings and international conferences.

Required qualifications:
1) A Ph.D. in atmospheric sciences or an engineer diploma obtained
before the date of the application.
2) An expertise in Fortran and Unix, and an experience in high computing.
3) A good practice in French or English languages.
An experience in climate modelling and/or in statistics will be welcome.

Practical information:
The successful applicant will be contracted by M?t?o-France and will be
based at the ?Centre National de Recherches M?t?orologiques - Groupe
d?Etude de l?Atmosph?re M?t?orologique? (Toulouse, France) within the
climate research group. The opened position will start in January 2012
for a 12-month duration with a possible 4-month extension. The net
salary will be from 2000 to 2800 euros per month depending on
qualifications.

For full consideration, an application letter including a detailed
statement of research interest, along with a curriculum vitae (including
research experience, publications and conferences, computing skill and
different language practises) and the names, telephone and email address
of 2 referees should be sent by email before November 30th 2011 to:
herve.douville@meteo.fr
