Post-doctoral research position on global aerosol-cloud interactions

We are looking for a post-doctoral researcher on global aerosol-cloud interactions and radiative effects in the dynamic Climate Processes Group <http://www.physics.ox.ac.uk/research/climate-processes> within the sub-Department of Atmospheric, Oceanic and Planetary Physics of the Department of Physics at the University of Oxford. The post is available immediately initially for a fixed-term period of two and a half years.

This position is part of the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) funded research consortium ACID-PRUF, with the objective to reduce the uncertainty in estimates of radiative forcing and climate feedbacks relating to aerosol and cloud processes through a targeted laboratory measurement and modelling programme, between ten UK universities and research centres. Within the consortium, the University of Oxford is coordinating the global modelling activities.

The focus of this research will be on uncertainties in the representation of aerosol-cloud processes in complex global climate models with the aim to assess and quantify the impact of parametric uncertainties on radiative forcing through global modeling - in close interaction with laboratory measurements and process studies conducted within ACID-PRUF.

The successful applicant will guide this research activity and is expected to develop original research strategies, take responsibility for the relevant model development and run the models on local as well as supercomputing facilities. The results should be presented at national and international meetings as well as published in high-impact publications. This post offers the possibility to co-advise a doctoral student and potentially other teaching opportunities.

Applicants should have a doctorate in atmospheric physics or a related field and ideally a strong aerosol/cloud physics background. As this consortium spans all the way from detailed laboratory measurements to global climate modelling, this post would suit an applicant with related process modelling or measurement experience and the interest to refocus on global climate modelling (or vice versa).

Please direct informal enquiries to Dr Philip Stier.

Only applications received before midday on 31 January 2012 can be considered. All applications have to be made online. Further details and the application form can be found on the University of Oxford recruitment webpage<https://www.recruit.ox.ac.uk> using the Vacancy ID 101748.

PhD (DPhil) Project at University of Oxford

We are looking for excellent applicants for a PhD (DPhil) studentship on "Investigating Aerosol Effects on Convective Clouds and Climate Using Time-Resolved Remote Sensing" in the Climate Processes Group<http://www.physics.ox.ac.uk/research/climate-processes> within the sub-Department of Atmospheric, Oceanic and Planetary Physics of the Department of Physics at the University of Oxford. Funded by a grant of the European Research Council (ACCLAIM), the studentship will start in autumn 2012.

In the ACCLAIM project we will consistently combine global models, cloud resolving models and remote sensing data to advance our understanding on the physical processes underlying such observed relationships. Closely tied with the other research strands in ACCLAIM, this PhD (DPhil) project will develop novel constraints on aerosol-convection interactions and their representation in models based on resolved remote sensing from geo-stationary satellites, such as MSG, and ground based instruments, such as radar and lidar.

This PhD (DPhil) project is expected to involve an active co-operation with the UK aerosol-cloud community, the UK MetOffice as well as international partners, such as the German Space Agency (DLR) / University of Munich.

Please see our Graduate Admissions Webpage<http://www2.physics.ox.ac.uk/study-here/postgraduates/research-projects-for-2012-0> for more details. Graduate application deadlines at the University of Oxford are streamed but we strongly recommend to apply for the 20 January deadline. Please direct informal enquiries to Philip Stier.

POSTDOCTORAL RESEARCH ASSOCIATE IN DYNAMICAL SYSTEMS
FACULTY OF SCIENCE
SCHOOL OF MATHEMATICS AND STATISTICS
REFERENCE NO. 2142/1211
Applications are sought for a Postdoctoral Research Associate position in Dynamical Systems. This position is funded by an Australian Research Council (ARC) Discovery Project Grant ?Extracting macroscopic variables and their dynamics in multiscale systems with metastable states? held by Gary Froyland (g.froyland@unsw.edu.au<mailto:georg.gottwald@usyd.edu.au>) and Georg Gottwald (georg.gottwald@usyd.edu.au<mailto:georg.gottwald@usyd.edu.au>).
The dynamics of large complex systems are complicated by their high dimensionality and by the possible existence of processes running on temporal scales varying by several orders of magnitude. The aim of this project is to develop innovative mathematical theory and numerical algorithms to identify a set of reduced low-dimensional macroscopic coordinates, given only a set of observations, that best capture the long term behaviour of such complex systems. The mathematical toolset will include analytical and numerical methods from dynamical systems theory and ergodic theory.
This is an opportunity to play a leading role within a collaborative research team based at the Schools of Mathematics and Statistics at the University of Sydney and the University of New South Wales. Teaching is not a requirement however opportunities to teach may be available if desired.

You will have:
? PhD degree in Mathematics or be close to completing one
? expertise in dynamical systems theory and/or ergodic theory with programming skills
? demonstrated ability to conduct high-quality research under limited supervision either independently or as part of a research team
? published research as sole author or in collaboration
? excellent written and verbal communication skills.
The position is full-time fixed-term for two years subject to completion of a satisfactory probation and confirmation period for new appointees. Membership of a University approved superannuation scheme is a condition of appointment.
Remuneration package: approx. $92K p.a. (as of January 2012, which includes Level A6 base salary, leave loading and 17% employer?s contribution to superannuation). The Level of appointment will be commensurate with experience and expertise.
All applications must be submitted via the University of Sydney careers website. Visit sydney.edu.au/positions<http://sydney.edu.au/positions/> and search by the reference number for more information and to apply.
CLOSING DATE: 6 February 2012 (11:30pm Sydney time)

Specialists from various disciplines work together at SRON Netherlands Institute for Space Research to push back the frontiers of technology and with this to advance the boundaries of scientific knowledge. SRON is considered to be a global leader in the area of earth and space science, due to the space instruments it develops for the satellites of ESA, NASA and JAXA.
Our Earth & Planetary Science Division currently has a position for a:
Ph.D student (OIO)
on ?inverse modeling of the global sources of methane using satellite instruments?

Project Outline
Methane is the second most important human produced greenhouse gas, after carbon dioxide. For a reliable forecast of future climate change it is essential to improve our understanding of the global cycle of this gas. Methane is investigated using a ground-based monitoring network and satellite instruments to map the global distribution of methane in the atmosphere. The so-called inverse modeling technique is used to translate these measurements into corresponding emissions at the Earth?s surface. In the case of long-lived greenhouse gases, such as methane, it is a challenge for the satellites to meet the required level of accuracy. The most successful method so far is the so-called proxy method, which makes use of the ratio of methane over carbon dioxide. It is assumed that the contribution of carbon dioxide is well enough understood to use this method for studying methane. However, with the improved measurement quality obtained using the GOSAT instrument this assumption is starting to become an important limitation. The aim of this project is to develop a new method for the interpretation of proxy measurements, in which the ratio is explicitly modeled and the contributions of methane and carbon dioxide are derived separately. This method will be developed and tested using GOSAT and applied to the full time series of SCIAMACHY, which by now covers nearly a decade and provides useful insight in the recent evolution of global methane.
Tasks

? Coupling of existing inverse modeling codes for methane and carbon dioxide for inverse modeling of proxy measurements;

? Model validation and emission estimation using the available measurements;

? Presentation of results at international conferences and publication in scientific journals.
This project will be carried out in close collaboration with the Institute for Marine and Atmospheric Research Utrecht (IMAU).
Requirements

? We are looking for an enthusiastic candidate with a M.Sc. in physics, applied mathematics or related studies;

? Experience in computer programming is compulsory, preferably in Python and Fortran 90;

? The successful candidate is capable of working both independently and in a team;

? He or she has a good knowledge of the English language.
Employment conditions
Employment of this full-time position at SRON-Utrecht is by NWO (The Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research) and will be for a period of 4 years. The salary will be in accordance with the salary scales of NWO for PhD students starting in the first year with ?2.037,- gross per month, rising to ?2.610,- in the fourth year of employment on a full-time basis.

Inter-sensor Bias Estimation in Sea Surface Temperature fields - Postdoc
position at the University of Liege

Climate studies need long-term data sets of homogeneous quality, in
order to discern trends from other physical signals present in the data
and to minimise the contamination of these trends by errors in the
source data. Satellite data have proved as very valuable, and we count
now on more than 25 years of data for variables like sea surface
temperature (SST). In order to obtain data sets valid for climate
research, it is necessary to develop or improve techniques to homogenise
data coming from different satellites, as biases exist between them due
to their technical characteristics and the changing physical properties
of the measured environments.

The GHER of the University of Li?ge (Belgium) coordinates the project
BESST (inter-sensor Bias Estimation in Sea Surface Temperature fields)
that will start on January 2012. We seek a person at the post-doc level
that will study the biases between multiple SST satellite sensors.
Statistical techniques, based on the principal mode decomposition
approach, will be used to reconstruct missing data in SST bias fields.
The spatio-temporal variability of the inter-sensor bias fields will be
analysed to better understand the nature of these biases.

Candidates must have a PhD in Oceanography, Remote Sensing (applied to
the environment), Physics, or related field. Programming skills are
required (such as Matlab/Octave or Fortran), as well as a good level of
English (oral and written). This full-time position has an initial
duration of 1 year, starting as soon as possible, and is potentially
renewable 1 additional year.

Interested persons are invited to send an application dossier consisting
of an application letter, a curriculum vitae with full contact
information, copy of PhD diploma, and full contact information of 3
professional references to Aida Alvera-Azcarate (a.alvera@ulg.ac.be).
The review of applications will start immediately until the position is
filled.
