PhD proposition

Physico-chemical and optical properties of mineral dust in the western Mediterranean: aging during transport and implications for the estimation of the direct radiative effect at the regional scale.

Mineral dust emitted by soil erosion on arid and semi-arid regions contribute to about half of aerosol emission at the global scale.
Because of their strong concentrations and their physico-chemical properties (size, composition and morphology), mineral dust can affect the radiative budget in the solar and the infrared spectra and therefore can affect the earth climate, with important consequences on the water cycle and the atmospheric dynamics.
The Mediterranean basin is an interesting region to study the impact of the radiative perturbation of mineral dust. Semi-enclosed basin by important orography, the Mediterranean basin is the source or the transport region of several types of aerosols of natural and anthropogenic origins, e.g., sea salt, biogenic, biomass burning, industrial and urban, including mineral dust which is emitted from Africa, the most intense source at the global scale. The Mediterranean basin is submitted to a strong demographic increase and to a tendency to drought.
The research proposed for this PhD position will be conducted during the ChArMEx (Chemistry-Aerosol Mediterranean Experiments) program, aiming at quantifying the direct radiative impact of mineral dust aerosols at the regional scale. The objective of the work is the characterisation of the physico-chemical properties which rule the direct radiative effect and the investigation of the effect of aging during transport over the basin, by deposition, mixing with aerosol of other origins, absorption of water vapour and by heterogeneous reactions with gaseous species. In particular, the characterisation of the surface state of dust particles and the possible coating of dust particles with organic material will be investigated. The candidate will participate to field campaign which will be conducted in June 2013 both onboard the French research aircraft ATR-42 and on the ground at the Island of Lampedusa. He/she will be in charge of aerosol sampling which will be performed using the sampling tools developed at the LISA, the AVIRAD airborne sampling system and the PEGASUS mobile platform. The results of the experimental investigation will be used to initiate modelling of the optical and radiative properties of mineral dust. The results will be compared to data obtained for dust at emission to highlight the possible effect of aging.

The candidate will have a strong background in physics (preferred) or chemistry. He/She will have a good knowledge of English. Enthusiastic and highly-motivated candidates are preferred.
The research will be conducted at the Laboratoire Interuniversitaire des Syst?mes Atmosph?riques (LISA), in Cr?teil - France (www.lisa.u-pec.fr), under the supervision of Dr. Paola Formenti (phone: 0033(0)1.45.17.15.22; email formenti@lisa.u-pec.fr).
Funding for this scholarship is not secured but it is very likely and it will also depend on the quality of the candidate. After examination of his/her CV by the Doctoral School, he/she will be interviewed (in English if necessary, by skype if requested) in early July. The appointment will be for three years starting from September 2012. The monthly salary will be around 1700 euros net.
The diploma will be awarded by the Doctoral School of the Universities Paris Marie-Pierre Curie and Paris Diderot.

The Biodiversity and Climate Research Centre (BiK-F) is a new interdisciplinary institute with the mission to carry out internationally outstanding research on the interactions of biodiversity and climate change. It has been founded by the Senckenberg Gesellschaft fuer Naturforschung, the Goethe-University Frankfurt am Main and others partners. The centre provides a new, dynamic research environment that integrates a variety of disciplines from both natural and social sciences. The Project Area E ?Data and Modelling Centre? invites applications for

Postdoc Modeler in Land-Atmosphere Interaction Project group E1 (Ref. #E37a)

We are seeking a researcher with special interest in feedbacks between atmosphere and vegetation. The research should focus on the identification of weaknesses in the representation and improvement of regional-scale physical processes in atmosphere-soil-water-vegetation system models. The modelling platform will be the regional climate model system COSMO-CLM (www.clm-community.eu), which is intensively used and further developed at BiK-F and in the Mesoscale Meteorology and Climate group at the Goethe-University.

Applicants should hold a PhD degree in a natural science discipline (e.g. Physics, Meteorology, Mathematics, ...) and have experience with atmospheric models. In addition to scientific independence, the ideal candidate should demonstrate originality of the research focus and excellence in communication skills. Excellent knowledge of the English language both in spoken and written as well as publications in peer-reviewed international journals are required.

Salary and benefits are according to public service positions in Germany (TV-H E 13). The Research Centre BiK-F advocates gender equality. Women are therefore strongly encouraged to apply. Equally qualified severely handicapped applicants will be given preference.

The contract shall start as soon as possible and will initially be restricted to two years. An extension beyond is envisioned, but depends on personal performance and the availability of funds. The duty station will be Frankfurt am Main, Germany.

Please send applications by mail or (preferably) e-mail, mentioning the reference of this position (#E37a), and including a cover letter describing your motivation to apply, a detailed CV, two references, and, if applicable, a list of publications, until April 28th 2012 to Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. V. Mosbrugger, Scientific Coordinator Biodiversity and Climate Research Centre, Senckenberganlage 25, D-60325 Frankfurt am Main, Germany. We seek a highly motivated and qualified researcher or numerical modeling support scientist to
join a new research group at The University of Melbourne as part of the Greenhouse Gas
Monitor (GGM) project funded under the Australian Space Research Program. GGM will
develop a cost-effective ground-based instrument for measuring column-integrated CO2
concentrations for use in satellite validation, numerical weather prediction and estimation of
CO2 sources and sinks. The Melbourne University team, led by Prof. Peter Rayner, will develop
the algorithms to use such data and plan optimal deployment. The successful applicant will join
a growing modeling team so there is some flexibility in their role. The position is suitable either
for an early career researcher wishing to develop a research profile or for a modeling support
engineer. The roles and responsibilities would be different in these two cases with the ECR
taking responsibility for publication and contributing more to the scientific direction of the project.
The successful applicant will:
1) Link the atmospheric model of the Australian Community Climate and Earth System
Simulator (ACCESS) to the transport model TM5 for use in an existing inversion
system.
2) Perform inversions with current satellite and in-situ data to provide a performance
baseline.
3) Apply algorithms to validate and, if necessary, calibrate satellite CO2 measurements
using existing ground-based column measurements and participate in the development
of algorithms for planning optimal networks of GGM instruments for source-sink
determination and calibration/validation.
4) An ECR would be expected to take primary responsibility for the tasks (under
supervision) while a modeling support engineer would be expected to build and
maintain the underlying modeling systems but would not be expected to lead the
analysis and publication of results. The role is, however, flexible.
The position is available immediately.

Salary is in the range $a57k--$a97k depending on the experience of the
candidate. the duration is 2 years. More information and the
application can be found at
http://jobs.unimelb.edu.au/jobSearch.asp?stp=AW by searching for the
position number 0028775. the closing date for applications is March
31. for more information contact Peter Rayner (prayner@unimelb.edu.au)
but please do not submit applications directly to that address since
they may not be properly recorded.
regards
Peter Rayner
