The Laboratoire de Physique et Chimie de l'Environnement et de l'Espace (LPC2E) and The Observatoire de l'Univers en R?gion Centre (OSUC) in Orl?ans (France) invites applications to an open post-doctoral position in atmospheric chemistry modelling.
Topic : Until recently, the sole type of volcanic emissions that was
thought to be of importance for atmospheric chemistry and climate was
large volcanic eruptions which can reach the stratosphere. This view has
changed when very high concentrations of bromine oxide have been
observed in a non explosive plume of Soufriere Hills, Montserrat. The
objective of the postdoc is to study the evolution of halogen species
emitted by passively degassing volcanoes and their impact on atmospheric
chemistry at local and regional scales. The successful applicant will
work on cases studies of degassing events for which measurements of
chemical species in the volcanic plume are available. She/He will
simulate theses events using the CATT-BRAMS mesoscale model. These
simulations together with the measurements will be used to test our
understanding of the chemistry in volcanic plumes and to analyse in
detail the atmospheric processes that affect the concentrations of the
volcanic halogens. She/He will also investigatethe impact of these
species on the chemical composition of the atmosphere at local and
regional scales by performing some sensitivity studies.
The candidate must hold a Ph.D in atmospheric sciences or equivalent.
Experience in modelling and interest in atmospheric chemistry are
desirable. The position requires good skill in Fortran.
