It is a unique institution in Germany, which combines the missions of a university with those of a national research center of the Helmholtz Association. With 9000 employees KIT is one of the largest research and education institutions worldwide. The Physics Department at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology invites applications for the newly established position of a Professor (W3) of Theoretical Atmospheric Physics at the Institute for Meteorology and Climate Research - Atmospheric Trace Gases and Remote Sensing (IMK-ASF). The position should be filled as soon as possible. We are looking for excellent candidates with very good international credentials in numerical modelling. The research foci should cover actual fields of atmospheric research, such as atmospheric dynamics, stratosphere-troposphere exchange, climate modelling or data assimilation, in particular by incorporating observational data from the upper troposphere to the mesosphere/lower thermosphere. An active participation in the Helmholtz programme Atmosphere and Climate is expected. Teaching duties include appropriate participation in the lecture courses of our basic and advanced meteorology programmes in the Physics Department, in the Graduate School of the KIT Climate and Environment Center (GRACE), and possibly for students majoring in physics. Applicants must have the degree of Habilitation or demonstrate equivalent scientific qualification as well as experience in teaching. KIT aims to increase the number of female professors and especially welcomes applications from women. Handicapped persons with equal qualifications will be preferred. Applications with standard documentation, including a summary of past teaching, a research plan as well as a list of the five most important publications, should be sent by March 31st, 2012 to: Dekan der Fakult?t f?r Physik, Karlsruher Institut f?r Technologie (KIT), Campus S?d, 76128 Karlsruhe. We have job openings for 2 PhD students to determine the water balance of the Thuringian basin. One of the PhD candidates will deal with the question of water budgets at the ecosystem level. This will involve establishing and maintaining a field measurement program for sap flow measurements, the dissemination and interpretation of the collected data (including eddy covariance), with a view to understanding the ecophysiology including soil?vegetation?fluxes as well as creating a soil?vegetation?atmosphere exchange model. The other PhD candidate will try to quantify the water balance of the Thuringian Basin. This will involve integrating local field measurements as well as satellite data into a hydrologic model (mHM) in order to calibrate and, where necessary, improve it. The jobs are part of the BMBF financed project ?Integrated Fluid Dynamics in Sedimentary Basins? (INFLUINS). The PhD will be associated to the Institute for Geological Sciences at the Friedrich Schiller University, Jena and with the Department for Hydrosystems Modelling, Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research (UFZ) in Leipzig. Place of work will be Leipzig. Thank you, Gilles Bellon Centre National de Recherches M?t?orologiques ====== Two-year post-doctoral fellowship at CNRM (Toulouse, France) ===== The Centre National de Recherches M?t?orologiques (Toulouse, France) invites application for 2-year post-doctoral position on tropical climate variability. The subseasonal variability of tropical precipitation (convectively-coupled gravity waves, Madden-Julian Oscillation) is poorly simulated by most general circulation models. The goal of this post-doc is to diagnose which aspects of this variability are reproduced, or not, by the state-of -the-art general circulation models in different configurations, and to understand how the biases can be related to the mechanisms at play in each model, and in particular the convection-dynamics feedbacks. The successful applicant is expected to analyze the variability of tropical convection at subseasonal timescales in the recent CMIP5 simulations, and to investigate the mechanisms of this variability in different model configurations (coupled ocean-atmosphere, atmosphere-only, and aquaplanet). Aquaplanet simulations will be a focus of the projected work, and the successful applicant will be responsible for designing new aquaplanet simulations in coordination with other European modelling groups. Applicants must have a PhD in atmospheric sciences or a related science. Skills in data analysis and climate modelling will be appreciated. The position is funded by the European project EMBRACE that aims at improving the existing components of Earth System Models. The salary will be competitive and commensurate with experience. Applicants are asked to submit a vitae, a statement of research experience and interests, and names and contact information of at least two academic references to Dr. Gilles Bellon (gilles.bellon@meteo.fr). Applications sent before March 31st will receive full consideration. Starting date can be as soon as June 1st,, 2012. For additional information about the CNRM, please visit www.cnrm.meteo.fr. Questions on this job opening should be directed to Gilles Bellon. ------------------------------
Message: 2 Date: Fri, 27 Jan 2012 22:55:32 -0500 From: Kuheli Dutt <kdutt@ldeo.columbia.edu> Subject: [Met-jobs] Marie Tharp Fellowship at Columbia University To: met-jobs@lists.reading.ac.uk Message-ID: <BB3427E8-826D-4EE5-AB68-32F7444E4A66@ldeo.columbia.edu> Content-Type: text/plain; charset="windows-1252" Marie Tharp Fellowship 2012-2013 ***Application Deadline: March 31, 2012*** Overview: The Earth Institute and Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory at Columbia University invite applications for the Marie Tharp Fellowship 2012-2013. This fellowship is part of a greater EI/LDEO effort at promoting the advancement of women in science. The purpose of the award is to provide an opportunity for earth scientists to conduct research at Columbia University for a period of 2-3 months. Fellows will have an opportunity to work with faculty, research staff, post docs, and graduate students during their fellowship. Each fellow is expected to participate in EI/LDEO activities and make a scientific presentation during their residence.
Background: This fellowship honors Marie Tharp, the first to map details of the ocean floor on a global scale. She published the pivotal interpretation of mid-ocean ridges that was crucial to the eventual acceptance of the theories of plate tectonics and continental drift. Tharp came to the Lamont Geological Observatory (now the Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory), where she began work on mapping the ocean floor. Her map of the ocean floor is still a foundation for research and education in the ocean sciences. Who Is Eligible to Apply for a Marie Tharp Fellowship? The competition is open to junior and mid-career scientists in the earth sciences. Applicants must hold a Ph.D. at the time of application. The goal of this award is to promote women in science. Faculty (full-time or adjunct) and researchers at Columbia University are not eligible to apply. Postdoctoral scholars are not eligible to apply. What Does the Fellowship Entail? The duration of the Marie Tharp Fellowship is between 2-3 months over the period July 2012 through June 2013. The fellowship must be taken in residence at one of the earth science units of the Earth Institute (see end for complete list of eligible units) and will provide up to $25,000 for support of the fellow during the fellowship period. The duration of the fellowship period must be agreed upon by both the fellow and the proposed collaborator. Budget: Fellows can use this award for salary, research and travel expenses up to a maximum of $25,000 over the fellowship period, subject to the following maximum individual limits: Salary $20,000; Research & Miscellaneous Expenses $10,000; Travel: $5,000. That is, if you request a salary of $18,000 then you can request only up to $7,000 for research and travel expenses combined. In case of compelling reasons, the fellow may submit a written request to the LDEO Directorate to waive one or more of these limits. Applicants are required to submit the attached budget form as part of the application. Application Procedure. Applicants must submit a proposal (maximum three pages) describing the proposed project and with whom at Columbia they plan to work. Applications MUST be endorsed by the proposed Columbia collaborators prior to submission. The proposal must be accompanied by a curriculum vitae, a proposed budget, two letters of reference and the budget form according to the guidelines given above. All application materials must be submitted by March 31, 2012 via email to Kuheli.Dutt@columbia.edu. All materials must be submitted as a single combined PDF document. Incomplete applications will not be considered. References may be either included in the combined document or sent via email separately. In the event that reference letters are to be sent directly by the letter writers, it is the applicant?s responsibility to ensure that the letters are sent in a timely manner. Selection Criteria. All proposals will be reviewed by a committee of scientists and administrators at EI and LDEO. The criteria for selection will be based on scientific excellence and potential contribution to LDEO / EI research activities. The following specific points will be considered: ? Quality of scholarly record as evidenced by publications and reference letters; ? Feasibility and quality of the proposed research as evidenced by the research proposal and reference letters; ? Relevance of the proposed research to the LDEO/EI Research activities as evidenced by the research proposal. Marie Tharp Fellows will be notified of their appointment by May 15, 2012. The post-holder will investigate the question of why atmospheric CH4 concentrations remained low during the last interglacial (LIG) period, despite exceptionally warm conditions in the Arctic. This period is relatively well characterised in terms of data, and so provides a strong test of current models. Furthermore, understanding gained of the dominant process(es) during this time will likely be important for our ability to simulate future methane concentrations. The project will utilise two detailed land surface models (HYBRID and LPX-Bern, working with Dr Friend in Geography) to simulate methane (and other important trace gases for atmospheric oxidative capacity such as isoprene) emissions, and a comprehensive model of global atmospheric chemistry (UKCA, working with Prof. Pyle in Chemistry). The land surface models will be run to provide boundary conditions for the chemistry model at different time-slices over the past 130 ky. Simulated methane concentrations will be compared with ice core measurements. The project will also examine the ability of the models to simulate the CO2 ice core record and, if time allows, simulations will be undertaken in which the surface and atmospheric models are fully coupled. Anticipated outputs are significantly improved understanding of controls on methane concentrations during the LIG, and/or recommendations for future model development. The successful candidate has the opportunity to develop key modelling and data interpretation skills, using state-of-the-art terrestrial physics, ecology, chemistry, and climate models. To be eligible for this position you must fulfil the Marie Curie requirements for Experienced Researchers, viz: on appointment you must (i) have a PhD degree or (ii) have at least four years of full-time equivalent research experience, after obtaining the degree which formally allowed you to embark on a doctorate. In both cases, you must be within the first five years of your research career. UK applicants must have been resident outside the UK for three of the four years prior to appointment. Non-UK applicants must not have resided in the UK for more than 12 months in the three years prior to appointment. More details about eligibility criteria see: http://www.greencycles.org/vacancies/criteria/ The start date should be no later than June 2012. Salary (subject to country-specific cost of living adjustment): Euro 53,000/year plus mobility, travel and career allowances for more details see: http://cordis.europa.eu/fp7/. For post description and additional information see: http://www.greencycles.org/vacancies. They are predominantly removed from the atmosphere by a naturally-occuring compound, the hydroxyl radical (OH), which is often called the 'detergent' of the atmosphere. During this 3-year project, the student will develop methods to infer detailed HFC source estimates using atmospheric measurements and chemical transport models. They will develop new multi-species estimation techniques, in which correlations between HFC source distributions are exploited to decrease the overall uncertainty on HFC emissions. Factors that lead to variability in the global OH concentration will be investigated using a chemical transport model, and the influence of these changes on HFC concentrations and top-down emissions estimates will be examined. Outcomes will include the most detailed and comprehensive set of 'top-down' global HFC emissions estimates yet compiled, and an increased understanding of the influence of variability in global hydroxyl radical concentration on the atmospheric HFC burden. These aims will be achieved through collaboration with the UK Met. Office and international partners such as the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) through the Advanced Global Atmospheric Gases Experiment (AGAGE). You will be based in the Atmospheric Chemistry Research Group (ACRG, http://www.bris.ac.uk/chemistry/research/acrg) in the School of Chemistry at the University of Bristol. ACRG is a fast-growing and friendly research group with a wide range of expertise in the measurement and modelling of atmospheric composition. Applicants must have, or expect to obtain, a 2:1 or above in a relevant discipline. An excellent background in mathematics is required, and some coding experience is preferable. The NERC funding source, which covers tuition fees and a stipend, requires that the applicant be a UK resident (http://www.nerc.ac.uk/funding/application/studentships/). Non-UK residents are welcome to apply, if they can obtain their own funding. Supervisors: Matt Rigby (web.mit.edu/mrigby) and Simon O'Doherty (http://www.bris.ac.uk/chemistry/research/acrg/people/odoherty.html). Applications and enquires should be sent to matt.rigby@bristol.ac.uk. -------------------------------------------------- Matt Rigby NERC Advanced Research Fellow School of Chemistry University of Bristol BS8 1TS UK web.mit.edu/mrigby ------------------------------

As part of a multi-institutional effort, including the JIFRESSE-UCLA, NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), and the National Center for Atmospheric Research, we are establishing a core U.S. IASI atmospheric composition science team and develop the capability to process IASI Level-1C (calibrated radiances) at NCAR. We will use this new processing platform as a test-bed for enhancing the radiative transfer and retrieval algorithms for tropospheric carbon monoxide (CO) and ozone (O3) in partnership with our European collaborators. We will also perform cross-satellite instrument comparison of trace gas retrievals under the optimal estimation framework using CO and O3 data with MOPITT and TES. The postdoctoral fellow will contribute to the initial analysis by studying the radiance residuals and retrieval characteristics from the IASI retrievals performed at NCAR. They will be part of the team that suggests modifications and updates to the algorithm and then evaluates the impact of the changes. In the second phase of the work, the postdoc will focus on intercomparisons of TES and IASI. This is expected to include processing IASI radiances through the TES prototype scheme, and then creating a matched TES-IASI dataset for statistical analysis to characterize biases. The successful candidate will work with Dr. Annmarie Eldering at JIFRESSE-UCLA and JPL, as well as Dr. Kevin Bowman and Dr. John Worden at JPL, but will have the opportunity to collaborate with researchers at all of the participating institutions. Candidates should have a Ph.D. in atmospheric sciences or a related field, with experience with radiative transfer and retrievals, as well as data analysis. The position is available immediately and will remain open until filled. The position is for one year, renewable for up to two additional years. Interested applicants should send curriculum vitae and the names and contact information of three references to Dr. Annmarie Eldering (eldering@atmos.ucla.edu). -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed...
