REFERENCE: IC3-UDIC-2011-02 LOCATION: IC3 headquarters in Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain ENVIRONMENT: IC3 is a newly established climate institution settled by the Government of Catalunya and the University of Barcelona, aiming at understanding future climate change and the dynamics and theory underlying those changes. It has also as main interests the accurate simulation of the interplay between climate and the biosphere and its feedbacks and the development of seasonal-to-decadal predictability capacities. In addition to studying processes at the global scale, IC3 will focus on the Mediterranean regions, tropical Africa, South America and SE. Asia. IC3 will have a body of 100-125 scientists in 8-10 years and a total staff around 200 people. Working languages of IC3 are English, Catalan and Spanish. For details, see <www.ic3.cat> Within IC3, the Unit for Climate Dynamics and Impacts (UDIC) led by the Dr. Xavier Rod?, is focusing on the improvement of the simulation of climate impacts, particularly climate effects on health, energy, food and the water cycle. UDIC is now seeking for a highly motivated young scientist for the working group of climate-driven diseases. Candidates are expected to take the lead in developing next generation of models for Vector-Borne diseases (VBD) and waterborne diseases (WBD), respectively and contribute to strengthen the capacities of the UDIC group on Climate and Health. The conditions for enrollment are detailed below: DESCRIPTION AND MAIN DUTIES OF THE POSITION: Two year (1+1) post-doctoral contract for improving VBD models in the framework of a recently funded European project. The project seeks to generate accurate seasonal-to-decadal changes in the incidence of malaria and Rift Valley fever in African countries as well as leishmaniasis and CCHF in eastern Mediterranean countries. The candidate is expected to collaborate with the Climate Forecasting Unit of the institute, which takes the lead in the generation of climate projections. REQUIREMENTS: Skill and demonstrated ability and experience in building, calibrating and in the validation of mathematical models (stochastic ODE systems...) for modelling the dynamics of VBD or/and (WBD). Experience in procedures for estimating modelling parameters (e.g. MIF methods), will be highly valued. The candidate should have demonstrated facility in handling large databases (especially climatic databases) and in programming languages needed for developing code and scripts, as well as proven skills in advanced statistics is a strong requirement. Capacity to write proposals, manuscripts and to work with other colleagues in a highly collaborative environment will also be valued. Flexibility for traveling to Africa and the US when needed will be also valued. Candidates without a demonstrated ability or a proven track of papers where the build-up of dynamical models is central will not be considered for this position. REMUNERATION: Salary will be commensurate with Spanish standards for postdoctoral contracts, starting at S12 (29.000 ?/year) but higher scales might be considered for exceptional candidates. Possibility of extending the contract beyond the two years will be possible on the basis of exceptional achievements, and tenure-track possibilities may be considered only after evaluation by the Scientific Advisory Board of the Institute at the termination of the contract. LENGTH OF CONTRACT: Two years, renewable. STARTING DATE: The position starts preferably during the last quarter of 2011, or as soon as possible after that date. APPLICATIONS: The application form and aptitude test should be downloaded from IC3's website <www.ic3.cat> Applicants should fill in the application form and the aptitude test and email both to <jobs@ic3.cat>, indicating IC3-UDIC-2011-02 on the "Subject". Reference: IC3-CFU-2011-03 To: met-jobs@lists.reading.ac.uk Message-ID: <4E9FE0C3.7080204@ic3.cat> Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1" LOCATION: IC3 headquarters in Barcelona, Spain ENVIRONMENT: IC3 is a climate research institute created by the Government of Catalonia in 2008. IC3's main scientific goal is to assess and understand climate variability and change at both global and regional scales to improve both predictions and projections. Linked to this goal, IC3 works on understanding and simulating how global change modulates variability and change in society and ecosystems. IC3's mandate is to become a leading international centre for climate research in Europe, with a regional focus on the Mediterranean area. IC3 will mainly develop top-quality research on basic and applied climate sciences, while informing society and stakeholders on future climate risks. Working languages of IC3 are English, Catalan and Spanish. For details, see <www.ic3.cat>. There is growing interest in the implications of climate variability and change from a season to a few decades ahead. Reliable predictive climate information is critical to ensure that costly adaptation measures to climate variability and change are well justified. The Climate Forecasting Unit (CFU, see http://ic3cfu.wikispot.org for details) is led by Dr. Francisco Doblas--Reyes, and undertakes research on the development and assessment of dynamical and statistical methods for the prediction of global climate on time scales ranging from months to decades. MAIN DUTIES: The successful applicant will investigate the predictability and actual forecast quality of seasonal-to-interannual ensemble predictions carried out with the dynamical global climate model EC-Earth. The applicant will be involved in developments within the EC-Earth consortium to carry out initialized seasonal-to-interannual ensemble simulations. The development and implementation of initialization strategies will be a main focus of the job. Outstanding opportunities exist for collaboration with other European research institutions. QUALIFICATIONS, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: The successful applicant is expected to have: A Ph.D. in Atmospheric Sciences, Physical Oceanography or related disciplines Experience in climate dynamics and climate modelling Experience in working with climate dynamical models, code parallelization, climate prediction and dealing with different data formats Good programming skills in Fortran90 and Linux, while knowledge of python scripting and the use of the R language will be highly valued Fluency in spoken and written English; fluency in other European languages will be also valued The incumbent will be part of a new and enthusiastic cutting-edge research group. The candidate should be able to work as an active and collaborative team member to help in the delivery of shared objectives, to communicate clearly with a range of colleagues of varying levels of technical and scientific competence. The possibility of scheduling the tasks as a part-time job can also be considered. REMUNERATION: Annual gross salary within the range of 27,600 EUR (IC3 salary level S11) to 30.600 EUR Euros (IC3 salary level S13). In principle, the successful applicant will be engaged at the lowest step of the grade of the post for which he/she has been selected. Exceptionally, recruitment may be at a higher level when this is justified by qualifications and experience. A deduction of 6.35% will be made for the Spanish health and social public insurance system. In order to calculate net salary figures, an additional tax deduction of around 15% (depending on the salary level) should be applied[1]. A tax free food allowance of 1,320 EUR/year should be added to the previous figures. LENGTH OF CONTRACT: Two years, renewable (2+2). STARTING DATE: The position starts preferably during the fourth quarter of 2011, or as soon as possible after that date. APPLICATIONS: The application form and aptitude test should be downloaded from IC3's website <http://www.ic3.cat>. Applicants should fill in the application form and the aptitude test and email both of them to jobs@ic3.cat, indicating IC3-CFU-2011-03 on the "Subject". CLOSING DATE: Applications will be accepted until the position is filled, although the evaluation of the first candidates will start in November 2011. Please, check the status of the offer on the corresponding link of the IC3 web site.* * -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed...
